The monetary value difference between the name and the no name of a work of art never ceases to amaze me. The painting hasn't changed, just the provenance. And history sleuthing through the mists ( mystery) of time.... thankyou for a fascinating read.

Thank you! We will probably never know the truth, but the story of this discovery is fascinating. I wonder what Isabella would have said, having given up hope of having her portrait after much insistence, if she had known about this affair?

A story as mysterious as Mona Lisa's smile. I'm so jealous of Isabella's studiolo and grotta.

Indeed! I stumbled upon the story of the portrait rediscovered in Lugano by chance. I had a bit of trouble reconstructing the timeline because the information is very fragmented (mainly from Italian and Swiss newspaper articles), but it’s an incredible story. And to this day, it’s still unclear whether it’s a priceless masterpiece or just a poorly executed fake… chi lo sa?!
