I just finished watching, last night, on Netflix. The book was a gift in our rooms when my family was with me in Sicily two years ago. I became so attached to the people in the Netflix version. I will now read my book. Thank you for doing this Substack.

Hey, HM, have you perhaps read Federico De Roberto's novel – "I Viceré"? It was first published in 1894, and has the same theme as "The Leopard", although its depiction of Sicilian aristocracy at the turning point of Italy's unification is much less romanticised, and its characters are conspicuously monsters, nothing noble about them. A great book in its own right, worthy companion to the Leopard.

What a wondrous film Visconti made, every single actor was magnificent in it. Thanks for your posts!

Hi Portia, thank you for your kind comment. Yes, I know I Vicerè, although not as well as Il Gattopardo, which I prefer. It’s a book I’ve read over and over again… and in the end I always cry!!! Have you seen the series they recently made for Netflix? I’m not sure whether it was released abroad.

Yes, it was released all over the world, there were a couple of articles in The Guardian and other international newspapers/magazines about it.

I didn't want to watch it, though, because I think Visconti's movie is the definitive version, it can't be improved.

Better not watch it… I did, and I was pretty disappointed. They changed the plot. I only finished it to see how far they would go!

They did WHAT!? What's the point in changing the plot, why do they always have to spoil it all for us? There must be a special place in Hell for those wretched souls. Changing "The Leopard" plot, what did they even come up with? Don Fabrizio calls the 7th Cavalry Regiment, and Sicily is rescued from those pesky Red Shirts? Angelica becomes a famous influencer? Urgh🤬

I don’t want to spoil it, in case you ever decide to watch it for some reason, but I think all the complexity of the original film (and even more so of the novel) got completely lost along the way. The actors are beautiful, and some of them are actually quite good, but… it really doesn’t work at all!

Omg. I now must read the book and forget Netflix!
